Where to Stay in Greenport, NY: Our Favorite North Fork Homes Nearby
Greenport is the kind of village you plan a whole trip around: a working harbor that turns gold at dusk, Front Street and Main Street for an easy walk, and vineyards a short drive west along Main Road. If you are wondering where to stay in Greenport, NY, the best answer is often a house just outside the village, with room to spread out and the water a few steps away.
At Luxury Beach Getaway, we want to be clear from the start: we do not have homes inside Greenport village itself. What we do have are North Fork homes in East Marion and Southold, most of them about 10 minutes or less from the harbor. Below, we walk you through each area and six homes we would book for a Greenport stay, whatever the season. For where to eat, drink, and wander once you are in town, see our Greenport village guide.
Village or Nearby: Choosing Your Greenport Base
Greenport village is compact and walkable, which is a big part of its charm. It also means space is limited: smaller lots, fewer large houses, and very little room to spread out with family or friends. A few minutes outside the village, the North Fork opens up into creeks, lagoons, farm fields, and quiet lanes.
East Marion. Just east of Greenport, on the road toward Orient. This is the closest base to the village: our three East Marion homes sit about 6 to 10 minutes from Front Street, with Gardiners Bay beaches and Lavender by the Bay nearby. Choose it if you want to be in town in minutes and still sleep somewhere quiet.
Southold, near Greenport. The eastern side of Southold, around Hashamomuck Pond, Long Creek, and the Sound, is only a few miles west of the village. Sunset Perch and Kayak Point are both about 7 to 10 minutes from the harbor. Choose it for bigger houses, water views, and easy drives to the vineyards.
Southold, Goose Creek and beyond. Closer to Southold’s own village and LIRR station, around 10 to 15 minutes from Greenport. You trade a few minutes in the car for waterfront lots, docks, and wine country at the end of the road.
Peconic. Farther west on the Sound side, about 15 minutes from Greenport. A good choice if Sound beaches and tasting rooms matter as much as the village.

Making the Most of Greenport
Once you are settled, the village is easy to enjoy at an unhurried pace, in any season. Here is what we tell guests before they head into town.
- Go for the harbor at dusk. Park once and walk the boardwalk at Mitchell Park as the light fades, then head up Front Street and Main Street for the shops and an early dinner.
- Make it a two-island trip. North Ferry runs between Greenport and Shelter Island year-round, so a morning across the water is easy to add.
- Save an afternoon for wine. Tasting rooms line Main Road and the North Road, and hours change through the year, so check before you go. Our North Fork wineries guide is a good place to start, and for a rainy day, see what to do on the North Fork when it rains.
- Bring a car. The LIRR runs to Greenport, but service east of Ronkonkoma is limited to a few trains a day, so check the MTA schedule before you plan around it.
